Today was such an exciting day. I truly do not think that I will be able to effectively communicate how exciting today's events were for me, but I will do my best. Let's start from the beginning. This morning Jonny and I woke up at 7am to fit in a quick workout, before his buddy from Saint Francis, Amos, was dropped off at our place. Stephen left around that same time for a three day long field trip with Cool School where he's volunteering for the next two weeks. I took some time for devo's, then played some darts with Jonny and Amos. It was a good morning.
Greg stopped by this afternoon, while Jonny, Amos, and I were playing darts. Greg is a long time friend and an incredible contact to have while I'm out here on the rez. He was an intern for a couple years, before he decided to move out here with his wife. Now they live about 15min outside of Mission. He's a super cool dude.
The reason Greg stopped by was because he was going to help me find a guy named Louis, who worked with the tribal gov in Rosebud for a number of years. I was looking for him today because I am hoping to volunteer in some way with the tribal gov to learn a little bit more about how everything works out here on the rez. He's a Christian and has worked with LJ before, so I figured he would be a good start at least.
Greg and I drove out to the last house Greg knew Louis had lived in-- people move around a LOT out here. We didn't really see any sign of Louis, but we knocked on the door anyways. It turned out Louis still lived in that house, and he was VERY helpful! I introduced myself and explained that I was hoping to volunteer with the Tribal Gov in any way possible. During our conversation, Louis started talking about a partner he has who heads up a development program geared towards giving youth and adults jobs throughout the rez. He also told me he still knows people in every department in the Tribal Headquarters, so I have a lot of opportunities to meet people in the future.
One of the most exciting parts of finding Louis was the fact that he was willing to introduce me to the head of the development program, Eric. This was huge. After talking through what exactly his program was focused on, Eric explained the needs he felt he had within the program, which included staff supervisors and sales follow up.
Hearing about these opportunities was a "This is it!" kind of moment for me. During this past year I've worked a lot with supervising groups of people and sales in general, so I really feel like God is leading me in a direction where I can not only use the skills that I have learned this past year, but also continue to develop those skills for my future career opportunities. I'm really, really excited to have the opportunity to work in an area where I can use the gifts God has given me, but also get to know more people on the rez, which is so important to me.
After we finished our meeting with Louis and Eric, we drove out to take a look at a house that had some potential opportunities for our LJ Week teams to do some work on. The lady that lives in the house, Anne, is a very nice lady who has helped us immensely over the past few years with LJ Week, so it would be really cool to offer her some help with repairing her house.
I think I'm going to stop there. I try not to make these updates too long, which is hard because I'm very long winded when I type, but also there are so many cool things happening out here that it's hard to get everything into one daily update. If you have learned anythings about my day today, I want it to be the fact that God is SO good. God has prepared me in ways I didn't even realize this past year, so that I can be an effective volunteer while I'm out here this summer, and he will continue to use this summer to prepare me for this fall as I start a new job as a Sales lead. MIND. BLOWN. There's really nothing more I can say. God is good. All the time.
I love you all. Thanks for reading.
Adieu,
Brenden
Things I learned today:
1. Stephen does not like juice from concentrate.
2. Jonny is super jacked. Its tough keeping up with him during a workout.
3. Yoked is a new word in this house. It means jacked. I refuse to use it.
4. Ecclesiastes 2:26
