Almost a week has gone by since I arrive on the Rez. It's weird because it almost doesn't feel like it's been that long, but at the same time I almost couldn't believe it was Friday already.
My day started out at a very comfortable pace. I woke up at 7:30 again-- I'm starting to wonder why that's becoming a trend. I decided I was going to work out today since my arms were feeling better and I didn't have anywhere to be again this morning. It felt good. Devo's, breakfast, and morning prayer followed.
Emily is still off at camp. We haven't received any updates from her because her phone doesn't have service out here. We'll see her again on Sunday! Laura went off to Okreek, Jonny went to finish wiring a house with Greg, and Stephen left for Cool School about the same time. Then there was one.
I didn't mind being at home alone, because I felt like I got a lot done. I spent some time writing out emails, and such, then I debated mowing the lawn before I went on with my day; I was supposed to meet Louis today to go down to Rosebud and meet some of the officials in the Tribal Gov too, so I wanted to make sure I didn't take up too much time mowing.
I decided to try to call Louis before I did anything, but he didn't pick up, and he hasn't picked up the past three or four times I've called him. I kind of expected the same results this time. I thought it might be better to try to focus on my relationship with Eric, because I would love to get to know him better and I am really excited to work with him this summer.
I called him and he picked up almost immediately. I loved this, because out here it's tough to find very reliable people. I even called him once and he missed my call, so he called me back right away and apologized for missing me. Incredible!
Anyway, I asked Eric if he was in Rosebud for the day, because I would love to come out and meet some people and get a feel for what it is he does on a daily basis. He told me to come out in the afternoon when I was free and he would be there. Awesome! I was really looking forward to this.
I mowed the lawn in about an hour, then I grabbed something to eat and headed out to Rosebud. It took me a while to find the place. It's funny because the directions people give out here include descriptive words about the type of building they are in or another building they are across from, but never once have I heard directions like "Take hwy 10 and take a left on BIA 1"... It just doesn't happen. Oh well.
The cool thing about my trip out to Rosebud was the fact that I called Eric once on my way and once when I got into the city, but I went too far so he told me to turn around and look for the brown building with the red roof. When I was looking, I didn't want to call him again so I just prayed that God would help me find it. I drove around for a while back in forth in front of the Rosebud Police station that he said he was located by, then, boom, I found it.
It's a small thing, but God was gracious enough to answer my prayer. I also had a weird noise coming from my car, that I was kind of worried about because I'm looking into selling my car and buying a new one, so I prayed about that at a different point during the day too. While I was looking for Eric's building, I realized that the noise had stopped as well! God is good.
Once I found Eric's office, I had a great meeting with him and some of the individuals that he shares an office with. I met a really cool guy named Casey who seems to be very similar in character to Eric. He runs the other half of the office building I guess, but Casey works pretty closely with him, so I'm hoping I'll get the chance to know him more as well.
Eric showed me around some of the facilities they use for carpentry or storing materials. He showed me around the equipment they had to work with and gave me a run down of the staff he had and where they were for the day. He encouraged me to jump in wherever I felt like I could lend a hand, and he asked me to come in next Monday first thing in the morning. I'm in. I'm stoked.
So the rest of the day I just worked on LJ stuff. I'm trying to get all of my responsibilities done so I can focus on working with Eric throughout next week. While I was working on LJ stuff, Stephen came home from a long day at Cool School, Jonny and Greg came back, and Laura was the last to return. Then we ate dinner and just hung out. There was a power outage for some reason so we took the frisbee and spent some time outside.
Now we are just hanging out like we do in the evenings. Spending time together listening to music and having mild conversations. I'll be going to bed in a couple hours because tomorrow we are spending the day with the entire group that was at the birthday party last night. We're going up to the river to go tubing, then we're going to the casino for $14 all you can eat prime rib. I know. I couldn't believe it either. $14 all you can eat prime rib. That's just crazy. But I'm so excited for tomorrow!
Thanks again for reading. We'll talk again tomorrow, I'm sure I'll have so much to tell you.
In Him,
Brenden
Things I learned today:
1. Stephen is the king of crosswords. As King, he makes the rules and what he says goes. No questions asked. (I'm not very good at crosswords, so I am prone to cheating. Don't tell Stephen!)
2. Jonny knows a ton of good music, but sometimes he can't remember all the good stuff he knows.
3. John 14:13
